KATE MIDDLETON and Prince William have been married since April 29, 2011. At the wedding, the Duchess of Cambridge was given a gold wedding band.
Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 38, first met at the University of St Andrews in 2001. The couple dated for nearly 10 years before their engagement was announced. In November 2010, the royal couple posed for a photo call where Kate displayed her engagement ring for the first time.
She was given the sapphire and diamond engagement ring that once belonged to Princess Diana, experts at Joshua James Jewellery told Express.co.uk. They said: “Kate’s engagement ring is incredibly famous, known for sparking a huge increase in sales of sapphire engagement rings back in 2010.
“It features a 12-carat oval sapphire set in 18k white gold, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds.”The stunning jewel is also thought to be worth a staggering sum of money.
“Created by Garrard & Co. (the former Crown Jeweller), it is now valued at around £300,000,” the experts added.
“However, much of its value is sentimental. This engagement ring was passed down from Princess Diana, William’s mother.”
Just a few months after their engagement was announced, Kate and Prince William married at Westminster Abbey.Kate walked down the aisle wearing a custom-made dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.
Sticking with royal tradition, she borrowed a royal tiara from the Queen’s collection. The mother-of-three chose the diamond Cartier Halo Tiara which she styled with a white veil.
When the couple exchanged their vows, Kate was also given a Welsh gold wedding band from her husband.Picking that type of wedding band is often done by royals and Kate’s could be worth thousands of pounds, the expert added.
They said: “Kate’s simple gold wedding ring is crafted from a special nugget of Welsh gold (a tradition that dates back to 1923) by Wartski, a jewellers based in London.
“The value of a Welsh gold ring depends on the weight and purity of the gold used, but will likely be upwards of £2,000.”
As well as following royal traditions, the piece also had a link to the monarch. Before Prince William gave the ring to Kate, he was given it by his grandmother the Queen.
The experts stated: “The plain, slender band shows off the incredibly rare and beautiful gold that it was made from, free of decorative elements that embellish many modern wedding rings.
“The ring was gifted to Prince William by the Queen following the engagement.” Kate will often wear both her engagement ring and wedding band when she is seen out. The royal also wears a third ring on her wedding finger which is thought to be an eternity ring given to her after the birth of Prince George.
