Jennifer Lawrence has had amazing roles, but have any threatened to fire her based on her body size?

Jennifer Lawrence is one of Hollywood’s most popular and successful actresses. Taking a break from the film industry for some years before returning for Netflix’s Don’t Look Up in 2021, the actress has enjoyed a career that many other aspiring actors only dream of.

Having given birth to her first baby in 2022, Jennifer has never been afraid to speak candidly in interviews and stick up for herself and other women in Hollywood. The Silver Linings Playbook actress has been vocal about gender inequality in the entertainment industry and the global MeToo movement.

When reflecting back on her early years as an actress, Jennifer made a revelation about the unrealistic standards of beauty that women in Hollywood are held to.

Read on to find out what terrible advice Jennifer Lawrence was given as a young actress, and where she stands on judging other people by how they look.

The Advice Jennifer Lawrence Received When She First Got Into Acting

When Jennifer Lawrence first started acting, she was given some advice that stuck with her. Unfortunately, it stuck with her for all the wrong reasons.

In a 2013 interview cited by People, Jennifer revealed that she was told she was going to get fired if she didn’t lose a certain amount of weight.

While the advice might have left an impression on her as a young actress, she now has enough confidence to stand up for herself if anybody tries to insinuate that she needs to lose weight to continue being successful in Hollywood.

“If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet,’ I’m like, ‘You can go f––– yourself,’” she confessed in another 2013 interview with Barbara Walters.

People reports that Jennifer questioned the Hollywood mindset regarding beauty standards in the interview, making it clear that she believes peoples’ appearances should not be up for discussion.

“I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV,” she said, referencing the TV show Fashion Police, in which hosts the late Joan Rivers, Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and George Kotsiopoulos (for the first five seasons) would comment on the fashion choices of Hollywood’s stars.

“Why is humiliating people funny?” Jennifer asked, adding, “I think the media needs to take responsibility for the effect it has on our younger generation, on these girls that are watching these television shows and picking up how to talk and how to be cool. So all of a sudden being funny is making fun of a girl that’s wearing an ugly dress.”

Considering the way Hollywood and the world’s media comments on women’s bodies, it’s no wonder Jennifer chose to keep her pregnancy private.

Jennifer Lawrence Also Had To Gain Weight For A Movie Role

While Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t seem to have bought into the pressure to lose weight for roles, she did end up gaining a few pounds for one of her most notable films.

In 2012, Jennifer starred in The Silver Linings Playbook opposite Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. Upon the request of director David O. Russell, Jennifer ended up putting on an undisclosed amount of weight for the role of Tiffany, a woman who lost her husband three years prior to the events of the film.

The Ultimate Rabbit reports that Jennifer revealed she was happy to put on weight for the character because it was a rare opportunity that “never happens” to actors.

The Advice That Jennifer Lawrence Did Take On Board

Jennifer Lawrence is adamant today that she doesn’t have to drastically change her appearance to succeed in Hollywood. She might not have taken on board that advice, which was given to her early in her career, but she has held dear other advice from various points in her career.

One of the most notable examples is the guidance that Oprah Winfrey gave her.

In 2017, Jennifer sat down with Oprah for an interview for the Hollywood Reporter. She revealed to Oprah while the media mogul was interviewing her that Oprah herself had given Jennifer the best advice she’d ever heard.

“It was probably by you, you just said it under your breath,” Jennifer told Oprah. “You were talking, and then under your breath you said: ‘You have to teach somebody how to treat you.’”

Then Jennifer added, “That’s the smartest thing I’ve ever heard.”

In the same interview with Oprah, Jennifer revealed what her favorite quote would be (and what she’d like to appear on her tombstone).

“My favorite quote that’s going on my tombstone, and I wrote this myself, probably stoned, is: “I definitely shouldn’t have done it, but I am at peace with knowing that I couldn’t not.”

When asked what lesson has taken her the longest to learn, Jennifer answered, “I’m still learning to slow down. My thoughts are so gigantic. I go from one small idea to 40 years from now, and I overthink everything, and nothing actually gets done.”

She then added, “Worrying does nothing. So living in the moment and taking everything step by step is something I have not mastered. I am still working at it.”
